If the signs of aging in your skin have started to feel discouraging, there is a solution. Old Town Med Spa offers JUVÉDERM®, an injectable dermal filler that refreshes the skin for a smoother, more youthful appearance.
Located in Chicago, Illinois, Old Town Med Spa is led by Drs. Shazel and Nael Gharbi. Both are board-certified in internal medicine and have completed advanced training in laser, light, and radiofrequency technologies, along with dermal filler certification through the International Association of Physicians in Aesthetic Medicine.
What Is JUVÉDERM?
JUVÉDERM is a non-surgical dermal filler approved to treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. It’s composed of a modified form of hyaluronic acid produced using HYLACROSS™ technology, which delivers a high concentration of cross-linked hyaluronic acid.
Hyaluronic acid is a sugar-based substance that occurs naturally in the skin, where it binds water, supports elasticity, and cushions tissue. When injected, it acts like a sponge—expanding to fill wrinkles, smooth folds, and restore lost volume. The added hydration also leaves skin looking fresh and radiant, while stimulating collagen for firmer, plumper results over time.
Are There Immediate Side Effects?
There is no downtime with JUVÉDERM. Side effects are minimal and may include temporary redness, tenderness, swelling, or bruising at the injection site—all of which can be concealed with makeup. In rare cases, small bumps may appear; if they don’t dissipate within two weeks, check in with your doctor.
What Are Anticipated Results?
Results vary from patient to patient, but the effects of a JUVÉDERM treatment are typically immediate, with continued improvement as new collagen forms. The treated area looks smoother, fuller, and more defined right away.
To minimize bruising, avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, or St. John’s Wort for one week before your appointment, and apply ice to the area for a day or two afterward. If a rash or pimple appears at the injection site, postpone treatment until it heals.
Recommended Course for Optimal Results?
A single JUVÉDERM injection typically lasts 6 to 12 months. One or two treatments per year will help maintain results, and over time, you may need less frequent visits thanks to the long-term benefits of new collagen production.
The JUVÉDERM Family
JUVÉDERM Ultra
JUVÉDERM Ultra is a hyaluronic acid gel used to smooth moderate lines around the nose and mouth and to add subtle volume to the lips. It contains fewer cross-links than Ultra Plus, making it a thinner, slightly shorter-lasting filler.
JUVÉDERM Ultra XC
JUVÉDERM Ultra XC is the same formula with added lidocaine for greater comfort during injection. It’s especially well-suited to scar correction, slight lip enhancement, and moderate facial wrinkles.
JUVÉDERM Ultra Plus & Ultra Plus XC
JUVÉDERM Ultra Plus is a thicker version of Ultra, with more cross-links for longer-lasting correction of deeper wrinkles, nasolabial folds, and marionette lines. Ultra Plus XC includes lidocaine for comfort. Because it’s thicker than some other fillers, it’s injected deeper into the skin for more intense correction—often in combination with lighter fillers for optimal facial rejuvenation.
JUVÉDERM Voluma®
JUVÉDERM Voluma uses higher cross-linking and a lower molecular weight to create a stable, long-lasting gel. Its thicker texture is ideal for lifting and volumizing, but not for delicate areas like the lips or the under-eye area.
Where JUVÉDERM Doesn’t Work Great
Dynamic Wrinkles
Dynamic wrinkles—caused by expressions like squinting, smiling, or frowning—are best treated with BOTOX®, which relaxes the muscles responsible for forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines. JUVÉDERM is designed for static wrinkles, which form as collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid naturally decline.
Under-Eye Hollowness
JUVÉDERM is hygroscopic, meaning it attracts water. Around the eyes, this can lead to a puffy look over time. Belotero and Restylane are better options for under-eye treatment.
Regular Treatments Are a Must
Because fillers are temporary, touch-ups are needed to maintain results—though less product is usually required for repeat sessions.
Who Should Not Use JUVÉDERM
Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use dermal fillers. Anyone who has recently taken blood thinners, has a bleeding disorder, or has experienced severe allergic reactions in the past should also avoid treatment or proceed with caution.
