Have you noticed deeper lines around your mouth, flatter cheeks, or thinning lips when you look in the mirror? As we age, the face naturally loses volume, and that loss often shows up before sagging skin does. Dermal fillers offer a fast, minimally invasive facial treatment to restore lost volume, soften wrinkles, and refresh your appearance without surgery or downtime.
At Old Town Med Spa, the MD Brothers, Dr. Nael Gharbi and Dr. Shazel Gharbi, are board-certified in aesthetic medicine and consistently ranked among Chicago’s top cosmetic providers. With more than a decade of medical experience and years of advanced injectable training, they deliver natural, beautifully balanced results you can trust.
What Are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are FDA-approved injectable gels that add volume beneath the skin to smooth wrinkles, plump lips, and enhance facial contours. Unlike BOTOX®, which relaxes muscles, fillers physically replace the volume that aging gradually takes away.
Old Town Med Spa offers a complete range of leading filler brands, including the JUVEDERM® family, Restylane® family, RADIESSE®, Bellafill®, and Belotero®. Your provider will recommend the right product based on the area you’d like to treat.
Benefits of Dermal Fillers
-
Smooth moderate to severe lines, folds, and wrinkles
-
Restore volume to cheeks, temples, and under-eye areas
-
Enhance lip shape, definition, and fullness
-
Soften acne scars and rejuvenate the hands
-
Immediate, natural-looking results with little to no downtime
Who Is a Good Candidate?
Most healthy adults bothered by volume loss, wrinkles, or thin lips are candidates for fillers. They may not be right for you if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have certain medical conditions. A consultation with Dr. Gharbi will confirm the best plan for your goals.
Which Areas Can Be Treated?
Dermal fillers are remarkably versatile, allowing your provider to smooth facial lines and wrinkles, create fuller lips, shape contours like the cheeks and chin, and revitalize tired-looking skin. The most common areas treated include:
-
Cheeks
-
Nasolabial folds (lines between the nose and the corner of the mouth)
-
Marionette lines (from the corner of the mouth downward)
-
Lips (to enhance shape, definition, and volume)
-
Hands
-
Acne scars
Many other areas can also be addressed with dermal fillers, including specialized treatments such as penile enhancement. During your consultation, Dr. Gharbi will discuss your goals in detail and recommend the best areas to treat for a more youthful, refreshed, and attractive look.
The Treatment Process
Your visit begins with a thorough consultation. Dr. Gharbi reviews your health history, listens to your goals, and designs an individualized treatment plan. Filler is then injected using a fine needle or a blunt-tipped microcannula to minimize bruising. Topical numbing cream or a local anesthetic keeps you comfortable throughout the 30 to 60-minute appointment.
When appropriate, your provider may pair fillers with BOTOX® Cosmetic or PDO threads for an even more refreshed result.
Pre-Treatment Instructions
A little preparation goes a long way toward smooth, beautiful results. Please follow these guidelines before your dermal filler appointment:
-
Avoid alcoholic beverages for at least 24 hours prior to treatment, as alcohol can thin the blood and increase the risk of bruising.
-
Avoid anti-inflammatory and blood-thinning medications for two weeks before treatment when possible. This includes aspirin, ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), Aleve, and other NSAIDs, as well as supplements such as vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, St. John’s Wort, and Omega-3/fish oil.
-
Schedule your appointment at least two weeks before any special event, such as a wedding or vacation. Final results can take four to seven days to settle, and minor bruising or swelling may appear during that window.
-
Discontinue Retin-A for two days before and two days after your treatment.
-
Reschedule at least 24 hours in advance if you have a rash, cold sore, or blemish in the treatment area.
-
If you have a history of cold sores, let your provider know. An antiviral medication may be prescribed before treatment.
-
Eat a good breakfast with food and fluids before your appointment to reduce the chance of lightheadedness during the procedure.
-
Dermal fillers are not recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Recovery and Results
Most patients return to normal activities immediately. Mild swelling or bruising can occur but typically resolves within a few days. Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and excess heat for 24 to 72 hours. Results are visible right away and continue to refine over the following week, lasting six months to over a year, depending on the product chosen.
