Dermaplaning in Chicago & Lincoln Park, IL

Dermaplaning at Old Town Med Spa by MD Brothers.

Ever notice how your foundation never quite sits the way you want it to, or how your skin still looks dull, no matter how diligent your skincare routine is? Peach fuzz, dead skin buildup, and uneven texture are some of the most common complaints we hear, and they can make even the healthiest skin appear tired and lackluster. Dermaplaning is a simple treatment that can transform your complexion into a smoother, brighter, more radiant version of itself.

At Old Town Med Spa, dermaplaning is performed by skilled providers under the direct medical oversight of the MD Brothers, Drs. Nael and Shazel Gharbi—board-certified in Aesthetic Medicine and Internal Medicine. With over a decade of experience and thousands of satisfied patients across Chicago, our team has the precision, training, and artistry to deliver the safe, beautiful results your skin deserves.

What Is Dermaplaning?

This technique eliminates that troublesome peach fuzz that builds up in your makeup. It removes dead skin cells and facial hair, leaving your skin surface super clean and smooth. Dermaplaning also allows for greater penetration of skincare products and creates a flawless canvas for your makeup to be applied effortlessly. Another benefit to this technique is that it will prepare your skin for more invasive procedures, such as laser treatments or chemical peels.

Who Gets Dermaplaning?

The ideal candidate for dermaplaning is someone in good general health who wishes to improve a rough skin texture or uneven skin tone. Patients who have shallow, mild acne scars, as well as fine lines and hyperpigmentation, may also be good candidates for this procedure.

Who Should Avoid Dermaplaning?

If you are considering dermaplaning, it is important to know what skin conditions could increase the risks of treatment. Those with severe sunburns, active acne breakouts, extremely sensitive skin, and those currently undergoing cancer treatments are not candidates for treatment.

Talk to your doctor before dermaplaning if you have:

  • Cold sores

  • Contact dermatitis

  • Eczema

  • Moles, freckles, or skin tags

  • Psoriasis

Furthermore, if you have taken Accutane or tretinoin within the last six months, you will not be able to receive dermaplaning at this time.

It is important to be completely honest about your skin quality and medical history before opting for treatment. Having dermaplaning when you carry any of the above risk factors could lead to serious complications.

Instead, let us know everything about your skin and any relevant medical history, so we can recommend the safest treatments for you.

Your Dermaplaning Procedure

Before

Be sure to avoid exfoliating products at least five days before the procedure. We want to ensure your skin barrier is not too sensitive before treatment. Furthermore, dermaplaning works best when there is an accumulation of dead skin cells to remove.

You should also discontinue any products that contain retinol prior to treatment. We will let you know precisely how long to stop using them before your session.

During

Your provider will use a specialized tool to gently remove excess skin layers. This technique not only removes peach fuzz but also lifts dead skin, improves the appearance of scars, and creates a more even complexion.

We strive to help you feel completely comfortable during dermaplaning. Anesthesia is not used, but we may apply a numbing cream to ensure the most comfortable experience. After we finish, a soothing gel is applied to reduce redness and promote healing.

After

It is common for skin to be red and sensitive following treatment. You may be advised to take over-the-counter pain relievers to alleviate any discomfort. While some swelling is to be expected, any excessive swelling should be addressed with a medical professional right away.

Dermaplaning Recovery Outlook

The results of dermaplaning continue to unfold for up to 12 months post-treatment. The first week, you may notice redness and swelling, enlarged pores, or whiteheads on the skin. Do not pick, squeeze, or peel the skin; these changes will resolve on their own.

Most patients can return to work two weeks after dermaplaning, but it could take four to six weeks before they can resume sports and physical activity. However, avoiding sun exposure will be crucial to your recovery during the first six to eight weeks post-treatment.

Don’t worry; we will guide you through the process and ensure you are fully prepared to care for your skin after dermaplaning.
